Johann Büsen – Dummy

Johann Büsen is a German artist and designer known for his colorful digital paintings that play with the fantasy and memory of the viewer.

He was born in 1984 in Paderborn, a town in eastern North Rhine-Westphalia, and graduated from high school in 2004. Afterwards, from 2005 to 2010, he studied at the “Hochschule für Künste” in Bremen. He lives and works in Munich and Bremen as a graphic designer. In addition, he is currently working on a 10-month scholarship in Bremen.

His work:

Instead of paint and brush, the Berlin artist uses his computer, a graphic tablet and a scanner. The result are amazing digital works of art. The elements comic, pop art, surrealism and street art are combined with countless images. The result is a mixture of countless different motifs. Moreover, Büsen has created these pictures as animated short films. The “painting” and “drawing” of such a work of art needs knowledge of different programms and the availability of hardware. This goes beyond the usual limits: Büsen prints his pictures directly onto the canvas with a large-scale printer.

Büsen works with topics and quotes from politics, film, science, nature, art, literature and everyday life. By marking his own artistic style as controlled and consistent chaos, the artist brings fascinating painterly experiences.

In his amazingly creative, multi-layered cosmos, it is always possible to find something new. Colourful, ornamental, his works of art are bridges from the analogue to the digital world, from the complexity of everyday life to art. Since showing his early works in his first group exhibition at Galerie Des Westens in Bremen in 2003, Büsen has participated in more than 100 solo and collective exhibitions in Germany and abroad. These include Galerie Brennecke, Berlin (2015); Stadtische Galerie, Bremen (2014; 2012); Galerie Der Kunstler, Munich (2014); Evelyn Drewes Galerie, Hamburg (2013) to name a few.
